Former White House aide and reality TV star Omarosa Manigault Newman claims she has heard a tape of Donald Trump using the N-word and other racial epithets during filming for The Apprentice.

A White House official also told CNN that the Situation Room is a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility and electronic devices are prohibited there.

Trump unleashed a furious backlash a year ago when he engaged in jaw-dropping moral equivalence, saying there were "very fine people, on both sides" (meaning both Nazi sympathizers and anti-Nazi protesters) and later claiming there was "blame on both sides".

American Urban Radio Networks White House correspondent April Ryan said Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) plans to look into Manigault Newman recording conversations in places where cell phones are prohibited.

"Who in their right mind thinks it's appropriate to secretly record the White House chief of staff in the Situation Room?" tweeted Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee.

Saturday Maggie Haberman of the New York Times said Trump called Manigault a "lowlife".

"Donald Trump is a con and has been masquerading as someone who is actually open to engaging with diverse communities", Manigault said Sunday on Meet the Press.

After turning down the job, she said she received a "flurry" of letters from attorneys representing the president telling her to "stay silent about Trump, or else".

But the other recording she discussed on Sunday could prove equally explosive.

White House aide Kellyanne Conway told ABC's This Week on Sunday that the first time she heard her former colleague suggest "those terrible things" was in the book. On the tape, Kelly said that if they made this a "friendly departure" and if the story was played as a year of service to the nation by Manigault, she could "go on without any type of difficulty in the future relative to your reputation". He couldn't simply say, "I condemn racism and acts of violence".

"We have confidentiality agreements in the West Wing, absolutely we do", Conway said on ABC's "This Week".

"I was surprised and, perhaps pleasantly surprised, when the president suggested that he was willing to allow 1.8, 1.9 million [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals] eligible folks to come and stay in the country and find a path to permanence", he added. "So yes, I had to protect myself and I have no regret about it".
