For the first time since all its four shutters were opened on Thursday morning, the water level in Idamalayar dam dropped below the Full Reservoir Limit of 169 metres enabling the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to close two shutters and reduce the discharge of water through spillway to 200 cubic metres per second (cumecs).

Due to incessant rain, dam reservoirs and rivers are overflowing, sections of highways have collapsed and hundreds of homes have been swept away in severe flooding in more than half of Kerala, the officials said.

Meanwhile, the district administration has deployed a police team of more than 900 members across the district, apart from a 50-member National Disaster Response Force to help in case of emergency. "MHA is closely monitoring the flood situation", Singh tweeted. Two more shutters of the Cheruthoni dam, part of the Idukki reservoir, the biggest arch dam in Asia, were lifted yesterday. Only one shutter of the dam was opened releasing 82 cusecs of water.

Although Kerala on Friday got some relief due to lesser showers pounding it than has been over the last two days, the death toll rose to 27.

A team sent by the Central government is also visiting flood-affected areas in Kerala.
