The Israeli Ministry of Defense (MoD) released the first images of the coastal defense barrier that it is constructing in the sea on the country's maritime border with the Gaza Strip on 5 August.

The flare-up comes as Egypt is trying to broker a long-term ceasefire between the two sides.

After a few hours of relative quiet, Israeli forces targeted western Gaza City on Thursday evening, the Gaza health ministry reported, adding that at least seven Palestinians were injured. The Iron Dome anti-missile battery, programmed to intercept missiles that go to residential areas, shot down 25 rockets.

Israeli media said officials were considering evacuating residents from areas near the Gaza border.

Later, Palestinians fired about 70 rockets across the border, and Israeli aircraft struck at least a dozen militant targets.

Air raid sirens signalling incoming rocket fire continued in southern Israel on Thursday morning, raising the likelihood of further Israeli reprisals.

On Wednesday, an IDF tank again struck Hamas posts in Gaza after gunmen opened fire at a civilian vehicle involved in the construction of a barrier along the border.
