Manchester United fail with Diego Godin approach

Manchester United have reportedly switched their focus to Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin in their frantic search for a new centre-back.

As per reports from the Daily Mail, Atletico Madrid centre-back Diego Godin has turned down a chance to join Premier League giants Manchester United on the English transfer deadline day.

Beyond a few late deals still being announced, teams in the English top flight are finished putting their teams together for the new season.

And with another potential target, Yerry Mina, on the verge of finalizing a move to Everton, United made an approach to sign the experienced Godin from Atleti on the deadline day.

The snub could seriously undermine U.S. efforts to isolate Iran over the country's controversial nuclear programme. Trump claimed the deal wasn't stopping Iran supporting terror groups or developing ballistic missiles.

Godin is into the final year of his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano, but Atletico are not actively looking to cash in and will therefore play hardball. However, Godin has made a decision to snub the offer in favour of a stay at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The 32-year-old has plied his trade in the Spanish capital since 2010 following a switch from Villarreal.

Leicester City's Harry Maguire, Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld and Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng have been said to be Mourinho's preferred options.

Godin, who was one of the best defenders at this summer's World Cup as Uruguay reached the quarter finals, could be the answer to Mourinho's prayers. What doesn't make much sense, however, is that United are only seemingly moving for the player with hours remaining of the transfer window.
