Paul Manafort Is Getting Transferred out of His "VIP" Prison

Manafort served Trump's campaign for almost five months, joining in March 2016 and climbing to be campaign chairman before stepping down in August 2016 after reports of his connections to pro-Russian forces in Ukraine.

In ordering his transfer to Alexandria, Judge T.S. Ellis wrote, "The professionals at the Alexandria Detention Center are very familiar with housing high-profile defendants including foreign and domestic terrorists, spies and traitors".

Manafort, who was charged as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and other related matters, was moved to Alexandria, Virginia, just days after his lawyers argued that he was being held in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, hurting his ability to prepare a defense for himself.

Federal prosecutors said Wednesday as they argued against postponing his financial crimes trial that Manafort said in monitored phone calls that he was being treated like a "VIP" at the Northern Neck Regional Jail.

Government lawyers reported Manafort had over 100 phone calls with his attorneys in the past three weeks. Manafort's lawyers have asked a judge to relocate a criminal trial starting later this month because of pretrial publicity.

A hearing to discuss Manafort's request for a trial postponement is scheduled for July 17.

Manafort's legal team shot back in their own filing Wednesday, calling prosecutors' characterization of Manafort's living conditions as "self-serving and inaccurate".

The judge in that case, Amy Berman Jackson, ordered Manafort to be jailed last month after he was accused of attempting to convince potential witnesses to lie on the stand. Manafort's not required to wear a prison uniform and isn't confined to a cell from 8:30 a.m.to 10 p.m., Mueller said.

In phone calls reviewed by Mueller, Manafort has told unidentified associates that he's finished going through discovery; meets regularly with his legal team; and has access to all his files, "like I would at home".

Manafort responded by asking that he be allowed to stay in Warsaw, citing concerns about safety and "the challenges he will face in adjusting to a new place of confinement" two weeks before trial.

"The Special Counsel does not pause to consider the reasons a detained defendant might have to make his situation sound better when speaking with concerned friends and family".
