The US president called it a "very nice note from Chairman Kim" and said "great progress is being made".

An agreement to return the remains of USA service members was touted by the Trump administration as one of the commitments secured during the president's historic summit with Kim on 12 June.

Mr Kim spoke of a "new future" between North Korea and the United States and expressed hope for "practical actions", but made no mention of denuclearisation.

"I firmly believe that the strong will, honest efforts and unique approach of myself and Your Excellency Mr. President aimed at opening up a new future between the DPRK and the USA will surely come to fruition", Kim wrote, referring to North Korea by its acronym.

Mr. Trump repeatedly touted that he shared a positive relationship with Mr. Kim, despite North Korean officials criticizing the recent weeks.

Pompeo traveled to Pyongyang last weekend to flesh out the details of an agreement reached by Trump and Kim at their historic Singapore summit last month.

The two sides had been expected to discuss at the Korean Peninsula's demilitarized zone the return of USA troop remains from the 1950-1953 war - an arrangement that the State Department had announced after Secretary Mike Pompeo's visit to Pyongyang last Friday and Saturday.

North Korea has said eight of the 17 - including Megumi Yokota, who disappeared while heading home from school when she was 13 - have already died, while four never entered the country, an account Japan has dismissed as unreliable.

North Korea asked the UNC Military Armistice Commission for general-level military talks on Sunday, according to sources, after it failed to show up at a meeting with the United States.

Pompeo, speaking Wednesday to reporters as he arrived in Brussels for a NATO summit with President Donald Trump, said that change was up to North Koreans. Representatives of the two countries had been poised to meet in Panmunjom, which is regarded as the truce village on the inter-Korean border.

Mr Pompeo had said progress was made during his two-day visit to Pyongyang. His top deputy, who took the meeting in Kim's absence, said his boss was out of town without revealing what was more important than a sit-down with the top US diplomat.

US officials and experts have said the shift in attitude was to be expected as the North Koreans are known for brinkmanship and trying to up the ante ahead of tough negotiations over their nuclear missile program.

At the summit, both leaders signed a declaration to work towards achieving peace on the Korean peninsula.
