Spurs and Lakers Re-engage on Kawhi Leonard Talks

The pressure, according to ESPN, revolves around Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James.

That could be great news for the Lakers if it turns out that James bolts for Los Angeles, they retain their assets and then land Leonard in free agency next summer. San Antonio could, theoretically, hold out until just before the start of the season.

It was reported earlier this week that the Spurs are ready to move on from Leonard.

"LeBron James reached out to Kevin Durant via text, from what I'm told, about coming to Los Angeles".

The Lakers' attempts to acquire Leonard from the Spurs could prove to be too problematic for the management team of Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka.

George was generally the superstar attached to LeBron for a potential Lakers tandem, but when Leonard requested out of San Antonio, his name was thrown squarely into the mix.

The Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers have also made offers for Leonard, but they are able to low ball San Antonio because trading for him would have the chance of being a one-year rental.

According to ESPN, the Lakers believe landing Leonard may be the key to getting James in free agency.

The Cavaliers can offer James the most money under National Basketball Association rules, a five-year deal worth $209 million, and he could also sign a short-term deal.

As the chatter about James' grew to a fever pitch this week, the four-time NBA MVP and three-time league champion retreated to the Caribbean island of Anguilla for a family vacation.

Wojnarowski reported last week that the 26-year-old has a strong desire to play for the Lakers as he's a native of Los Angeles.

There was a lot that led to the Spurs' deteriorating relationship with Kawhi Leonard over the course of last season.

Leonard's camp has made it known that he wants to be in Los Angeles, but he could be persuaded to stay in a larger market like Boston or Philadelphia.

This could involve the Lakers parting with their future first-round picks, the likes of Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart, and possibly restricted free agent Julius Randle in a sign-and-trade agreement.
