Richard Overton, the oldest living World War II veteran in the United States, has had his bank account compromised, his cousin confirmed to KVUE.

Someone is impersonating the oldest man in America.

It appears the thief set up a fake bank account with Overton's Social Security number and then broke into his personal checking account. "When we found out that this money was used to buy savings bonds and we'd look at each other like savings bonds?"

"We were broken hearted and lost just thinking about it like how can someone do Richard like this", said Volma. "It's a shock, it hurts, it hurts tremendously", says cousin Volma Overton, who discovered the theft.

Volma said a friend of Overton's filed a police report Friday.

The amount of money that was taken hasn't been revealed, but Volma told the Dallas Morning News that what was taken "was a significant amount of money".

The family said the alleged thief stole "a considerable amount" of money from the account but would not specify how much.

One silver lining is the account used to pay for Richard Overton's home health care has not been touched.

Cousin Volma Overton Jr. said that the purchases had been happening for a 'couple of months'. As of Saturday afternoon, that account has raised more than $370,000.
