'Star Wars' Spinoffs Suspended After Tepid 'Solo' Box Office

As news today came from Collider that Lucasfilm is now placing all its upcoming "Star Wars" spinoff movies in carbonite until further notice, it's kind of telling that there's been no outcry from fans or audiences. But sources tell Collider that the studio will move forward with their plans for The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson's planned trilogy and the series of movies from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

This news comes in the wake of the disappointing launch of Solo, which was only Lucasfilm's second A Star Wars Story spinoff, but which received mixed-positive reviews and fell short of box office expectations.

Its production costs also rocketed to a reported $275 million, more than the budgets of both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

There are a number of factors in why Solo's performance was worse than expected, but one many have pointed to is the movie's release date.

The franchise's other standalone movies have also experienced production trouble.

At the end of the day, whether we get more trilogies or standalones, the steady march of Star Wars on the big screen isn't going to end any time soon. Then there was Josh Trank's firing from the Boba Fett film. Rogue One visited a familiar part of the Star Wars storyline where we already knew what had to happen, but it featured an entirely new cast of characters on their own mission.
