Nixon Did It. Why Not Trump? Crib Notes for a Presidential Summit

President Donald J Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong-un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a first, historic summit in Singapore on June 12, 2018. "I spoke to Kim Jong-un and the North Korean administration five years ago, and he told me there were three things I should speak to the USA president about".

Pompeo stressed that the Trump administration would only accept complete denuclearisation of the North.

And with United States and North Korean officials reportedly struggling to close the gap between the two countries in pre-negotiations on Monday, giving up access to a full record of Kim's comments on Tuesday could hinder further talks.

Weeks later, more insults followed.

The US president met the North Korean leader in a historic summit in Singapore on Tuesday, and didn't hold back when complimenting his counterpart. North Korea's supreme leader seeks a formal end to that war, which has frozen the Korean peninsula in a state of conflict throughout the modern era and has kept almost 29,000 USA troops indefinitely stationed in the south, as well as an injection of foreign direct investment. "Both the American as well as the North Koreans are pleased with the arrangements, we're all set to go and things will start happening within the next 24 hours".

Trump's retort included mention of his own "nuclear button" - one that doesn't actually exist.

Donald Trump has been criticised for his effusive praise of Kim Jong-un.

"He said Singapore is clean and attractive and every building is stylish as he heard of in the past, adding he is going to learn a lot from the good knowledge and experience of Singapore in various fields in the future", KCNA reported.

Trump and Kim will meet at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island at 9 a.m. Tuesday (9 p.m. Monday ET).

He said Mr Kim has a "great personality" and is "very smart", which he described as a "good combination".

He said if diplomacy fails to move in the right direction, the sanctions "will increase".

But while Trump, and Kim, regularly stray off diplomatic scripts, a larger risk may be that there may be no full transcript, public or secret, of what the two leaders discussed. "I too, got little sleep last night", Moon told his cabinet in Seoul as the summit began in Singapore.

Pompeo laid out some of the USA cards on Monday, saying the administration was sticking to its demand for the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the North.

Pompeo said the prepared to offer "unique" security guarantees to North Korea to ensure that eliminating its nuclear weapons won't end badly for Kim's regime.

Trump said Saturday that he believes the North Korean leader will "surprise on the upside".
