An American commando was killed Friday in an attack in southern Somalia that also wounded four United States military personnel along with a Somali soldier, officials said.

The US had pulled out of the country after 1993, when two helicopters were shot down in Mogadishu and bodies of Americans were dragged through the streets. The group was blamed for a truck bombing in Mogadishu in October that killed more than 500 people and raised concerns about its ability to build larger explosives.

Al-Shabaab is fighting to overthrow Somalia's central government and establish its own rule based on its interpretation of Islamic law.

The Pentagon didn't identify the US commando who was killed, pending notification of next of kin.

The US's role in AFRICOM's area of responsibility has come under heavy scrutiny following an October ambush in Niger that left four soldiers dead. A Pentagon investigation of the incident produced a highly critical report.
