Amazon Scores U.K. Premier League Soccer Rights Deal

"Prime Video will be an excellent service on which fans can consume live Premier League football - including for the first time in the United Kingdom a full round of matches - and we look forward to working with them from season 2019-20 onwards".

Amazon secured rights to show English Premier League soccer matches, a deal which makes the e-commerce giant the first internet streaming service to buy live rights in Britain. The matches will be across two rounds of fixtures - the first December midweek round of matches, and all the fixtures on Boxing Day. The other remaining package of rights has been picked up by telco BT, which will play the matches on its BT Sport service.

Sky Sports paid £3.58 billion ($4.8 billion) for 128 matches a season in February, while BT has the rights to 52 games.

The matches will be streamed via Prime Video UK at no extra expense to Prime subscribers, which otherwise costs £7.99 a month or £79 per year. Existing rights holders Sky and BT can choose what games they show and tend to focus on bigger teams, meaning some sides are featured less on television.

No financial figures made public so far but the figures we do know, are that there are now set to be a massive 200 of the 380 PL games each season, shown on live TV starting in 2018/19.

The matches will be available to anyone with an Amazon Prime subscription, which means you shouldn't have to shell out any extra cash to get your Premier League fix.

The Premier League is easing into doling out fixtures to streaming video.

Roberto Firmino Grabs Beautiful Goal For Brazil In Anfield
It was the one player that most of the fans in Anfield wanted to see make an impression today; and Roberto Firmino duly delivered. The match between Croatia and Brazil is scheduled for 16:00 today.

The groundbreaking agreement was announced by the Premier League on Thursday. Prime costs the equivalent of $106 per year in Britain.

The matches, and the weekly highlights package, will be available on Prime Video in the United Kingdom at no extra cost to Prime members.

In March, Facebook reached a deal to broadcast 25 Major League Baseball games, available on the Facebook Watch channel.

The deal underlines Amazon's ambition to take on traditional pay-TV broadcasters in the multi-billion dollar battle for sports rights.

"Sky and BT are established Premier League partners and provide first-rate coverage of the competition through their live-match broadcasts and comprehensive programming".

In a separate announcement the Premier League also agreed that there would be a change in the distribution of money gained from the foreign broadcast deal.

Under the new formula, the maximum a club can receive is 1.8 times the amount received by the lowest-earning club, the Premier League said in a statement.
