The satellite is created to expand SES' capabilities to deliver very small aperture terminal and high-throughput data connectivity and direct-to-home broadcasting services in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East.

SES-12 will operate under the authority of the Netherlands and will replace and augment the services now being provided on SES's NSS-6 satellite. SES acquired Dutch-based New Skies in 2005. To fulfil its dual mission, SES-12 features both wide beams and high throughput spot beams to serve diverse connectivity needs. It is also equipped with eight Ka-band transponders.

"This is an incredibly flexible satellite that we're putting into our fleet", said John-Paul Hemingway, CEO of SES Networks.

It can help provide with Internet services to mobile operators, passengers on airplanes, cruise liners, as well as remote areas that are still without reliable connections.

"More content. More immersive viewing experience".

SpaceX later tweeted "Successful deployment of SES-12 to a geostationary transfer orbit confirmed".

The company SpaceX Elon musk moved to end 2018 mid 2019 commercial launch his spaceship with humans to orbit the moon.

Elon Musk's SpaceX announced back in February previous year that, in late 2018, it would fly two paying space tourists around the Moon and back to Earth. It is expected to enter service in late January or early February. SES-12 is designed for an operational life of some 15 years.

Falcon 9's first stage for the SES-12 mission previously supported the OTV-5 mission from Launch Complex 39A in September 2017. The initial launch was scheduled for last Friday but was canceled for more testing. Its communications payload incorporates multi-beam antennas linked to a digital signal processor, which enable a multitude of basic spectral channels to be allocated to various beams in a completely flexible manner. The company is expecting both the US and Europe to turn to the Falcon Heavy in the next couple of years for certain satellite launches.

This is actually confirmation of something we already more-or-less knew.
