Serena Williams injury: Will Serena play at Wimbledon this year?

Paris: Serena Williams announced her shock withdrawal from the French Open through injury on Monday just minutes before her scheduled fourth-round clash against Maria Sharapova.

Muguruza has been playing some of her best tennis in quite some time recently and is a legit threat to win her third grand slam title if she can continue to serve the way she has in her last few matches.

"It's very hard because I love playing Maria", Williams added after being denied a chance to add to her three French Open crowns and possibly equal Margaret Court's all-time record 24 grand slam singles titles in Paris.

She told a news conference: "Unfortunately I'm having some issues with my pec muscle". Her appearance at Roland Garros was her first Grand Slam after giving birth to her daughter in April a year ago. It was also her first since giving birth to Olympia in September. "To be able to put myself back in these positions and to not shy away from these moments, to come out on center court and want the challenge of moving forward and to be able to face Serena, I think that speaks for itself".

"I've always wanted to be a mom but I never seemed to have time with my career", she said at the 14th Annual Desert Smash Celebrity Tennis Event in La Quinta, California.

Williams added: "The first time I felt it was against [Julia] Goerges in my last match".

But Australia's tennis super-mum is still backing the American to add to her record grand slam tally, despite her French Open setback.

'I'm going to get an MRI tomorrow. "And try to get better and not get it to a point where it could be a lot worse". While Williams was on maternity leave, Sharapova recovered from an arm injury and a hiatus brought on by the discovery of meldonium in her system.

Sharapova had lost her last 18 matches to the former world No. 1 but the latest installment at Roland Garros was highly anticipated. I sacrificed so much to be here'.

"Every match has been getting better for me".

"I wish her a speedy recovery and hope she returns to the tour soon".

Serena was seen facing difficulty in even lifting her bag off court after her match on Sunday. She said during Monday's news conference that her decision to pull out of the French Open is "very hard because I love playing Maria".

She will await the victor of Monday's match between Spaniard-Venezuelan Garbine Muguruza and Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko.
