Ukraine faked murder of Kremlin critic to catch real assassins

Shortly after Babchenko's death was announced, Moscow and Kiev began blaming each other for the killing of the journalist, who is a vocal critic of the Kremlin and left Russian Federation in 2017, saying he no longer felt safe.

Ukraine's Security Service said it had staged the murder in an attempt to foil a Russian plot to kill Babchenko.

Yet Babchenko appeared alive and well at a police press conference on Wednesday, where confused reporters expected to receive updates about the "murder" investigation.

"I am sorry, but there were no options here", Babchenko said at the presser.

His wife was said to have found him with three bullet wounds and called emergency services and he died on his way to hospital.

Babchenko had moved to Kiev in the fall after fleeing Russian Federation, where he was a prominent war correspondent who in recent years had become fiercely critical of the Kremlin.

To applause and gasps, Babchenko took the floor and apologized to the friends and family who mourned for him and were unaware of the plan. At the news conference in Kiev, Babchenko had an important apology to make.

He fled the country in February 2017 after receiving death threats against him and his family.

"Ukraine is becoming the most unsafe country for reporters", Russian lawmaker Yevgeny Revenko said.

"We are relieved that #ArkadyBabchenko is alive", it said.

Gritsak said the agency had collected proof his assassination had been ordered by the Russian security services.

Earlier today the Kremlin had described the allegation by Ukraine that it was behind the murder of Mr Babchenko as an anti-Russian smear.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Vladimir Groisman wrote on Facebook that he was "sure the Russian totalitarian machine had not forgiven" Babchenko "his honesty and principles".

Making things even stranger, it is now being said by the regime that the entire saga was a lie created to entrap an actual would-be murderer that was planning to kill Arkady Babchenko on the orders of the Russian government.

While studying law in Moscow aged 18, Babchenko was conscripted into the Russian army and served during the Chechen wars from 1994 to 2000.

He reported on Russia sending private military contractors into Syria and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH-17 in July 2014 over eastern Ukraine, for which investigators on Friday held the Russian state responsible, something it denies. He left Russian Federation in February 2017, saying he was receiving threats and concerned he might be jailed.
