Jared Kushner receives permanent security clearance, ending uncertainty over his status

Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, finally has a permanent security clearance.

Kushner was among several White House officials who spent the first year of the administration working on provisional clearances, meaning he was allowed to view classified information while his Federal Bureau of Investigation background check was pending, the daily said.

Kushner had been working under an interim clearance, but it was revoked in February during procedural changes in the White House.

White House officials have blamed the delay in Kushner receiving his security clearance on administrative backlogs normal to a new administration, as well as the complicated nature of his application, CNN reported.

The decision raised questions about Kushner's ability to fulfill his extensive White House job duties and whether the delay in securing permanent clearance was related to special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

Abbe Lowell, who has represented Kushner in the Russian Federation investigation, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that questions asked of Kushner during the April interview were "the appropriate topics that Bob Mueller and his team were looking at".

Lowell said that Kushner answered all questions that were asked.

Career officials approved the clearance following the background check, the newspaper reported.

He used his interim clearance to read the president's daily brief and had requested more intelligence than any White House employee, other than National Security Council staff. "Since then, he has continued this complete cooperation, providing a large number of documents and sitting for hours of interview with congressional committees and providing numerous documents and sitting for two interviews with the Office of Special Counsel".

"They talk about stories about him being under investigation for his finances, for his role in his companies - let me tell you, those were not the topics", he said. He could lose his clearance tomorrow if he is indicted.

Some had expected Kushner might not receive a permanent clearance for the duration of Mueller's investigation. Kushner updated the SF-86 forms once more in June to include that meeting.

Kushner's application had been beset by multiple revisions and previously undisclosed contacts with foreign individuals.
