Buildings dismantled at North Korean nuclear test site

The Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site, located under Mt. Mantap in the northeast of the country, has been the site of five of the six underground nuclear tests North Korea has conducted. Trump welcomed the "gracious gesture".

The site is believed to house three tunnel complexes surrounded by granite bedrock ideal for containing large explosions.

Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon will lead the South Korean delegation at Wednesday's talks in Panmunjom, while the senior North Korean delegate will be Ri Son Gwon, head of the agency in charge of inter-Korean exchanges, according to the ministry.

Some experts have said the site had already been rendered unusable after reports that the mountain was on the verge of collapse after the sixth and most powerful underground blast took place in September. "I'm not trying to unify South and North Korea".

Kim's latest diplomatic overture has seen him hold a summit with the South's President Moon Jae-in and travel twice in less than two months to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

But U.S. intelligence officials have said it remains usable and could be reactivated "in a relatively short period of time" if it was closed. But it remains unclear if Kim would ever fully relinquish the weapons he probably views as his only guarantee of survival.

The top US diplomat did not elaborate, but his comment could refer to the type of assurances North Korea has sought in the past.

The United States is also offering "security assurances" to North Korea if they're able to forge an agreement.

Some experts believe Kim may try to drag out the process or seek a deal in which he gives away his intercontinental ballistic missiles but retains some of his shorter-range arsenal in return for a reduced USA military presence in the South.

Washington's demand was delivered to North Korea ahead of the summit meeting in Singapore between Kim and Trump.

North Korea announced at a ruling party meeting last month that it was suspending all tests of nuclear devices and ICBMs, as well as the plan to close the nuclear testing ground.

Mr. Guterres also expressed hope that progress over shutting down North Korea's nuclear programme would provide an impetus to address other challenges elsewhere in the world.

He further claimed that North Korea wishes to become a nuclear weapons state under the shield of officially being recognised as a denuclearised state.

Trump is expected to push North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons at the meeting in exchange for the removal of economic sanctions and USA assistance in rebuilding Pyongyang's ailing economy.

"It would, however, require North Korea to clear out the test tunnels and rebuild any infrastructure that might be removed or dig new tunnels at the site or elsewhere".

According to the KCNA announcement, the North will invite local press, but global media will be limited to journalists from China, Russia, South Korea, Britain and the United States, due to the testing ground's "small space". "What we need to see from Kim Jong Un is that he and the entire North Korean regime have made a strategic decision that they'll be better off without weapons of mass destruction".

N Korea said it will "completely" destroy Punggye-ri test site, in a ceremony scheduled between May 23-25 in front of invited foreign media.
