Bolton: 'Regime change' in Iran not policy of Trump administration

Trump's decision drew swift criticism from the deal's other signatories, including USA allies in Europe that tried for weeks to persuade Trump to remain on board and said they plan to keep their commitment to the deal.

John Bolton, who is Trump's national security advisor, said that Tehran's military had exploited the easing of pressure on the Iranian economy to meddle in conflicts across the Middle East in the last three years.

The E.U. was Iran's largest trade partner until 2012, when the Obama administration cobbled together a massive global sanctions regime on the Islamic Republic ― even bringing along China and Russian Federation ― to force it to make concessions on the nuclear issue.

Asked whether or not European countries could face such sanctions, Bolton responded: "It's possible".

Since the deal went into effect in 2016, lifting some sanctions in exchange for Iran opening up its nuclear facilities for inspections and accepting limits on its enrichment of uranium, Europe-Iran trade has mushroomed and companies based in the European Union have signed deals worth billions of dollars with Tehran. A short month after meeting between Trump and Kim Jong-UN to agree on denuclearization of North Korean regime, Secretary of state said that sanctions could be "lifted" against Pyongyang if it dismantles all its capacity in nuclear armament.

"The consequences of American sanctions go well beyond goods shipped by American companies", Bolton said.

When pressed by CNN on whether the administration would sanction European firms that continue to do business with Iran, Bolton said, "I think the Europeans will see that it's in their interest ultimately to come along with us". "Because of our technology licenses to many other countries and businesses around the world, as those sanctions kick in, it will have an even broader effect as well".

President Donald Trump's announcement last Tuesday that the United States was exiting the 2015 nuclear accord was met with widespread dismay in Europe where companies now face the threat of sanctions if they do business with Iran.

"The imbecile Trump's pretexts and insane move following a psychological war and breach of contract and unilateral pullout from the [nuclear deal] and his idiotic remarks against the powerful Iran revealed again the imperialistic nature of the criminal American leaders", one group of protesters in Tehran said in a statement.

But there are those within Iran's government who are less certain of the agreement's longevity.

Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he was leaving agreement sponsored by Barack Obama for lifting of sanctions on Iran in exchange for regime's stopping its nuclear career for a decade and accepting controls on it.
