Israel has hit almost all Iranian infrastructure in Syria, military claims

The statement from press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders followed the most serious direct military confrontation between the two bitter enemies to date.

The Israeli military said a "wide-scale attack" included the logistics headquarters of the Iranian Quds forces and military compounds south, north and east of Damascus, including a munition warehouse at the capital's worldwide airport.

Israel says its forces in the occupied Golan Heights were targeted by Iranian rocket fire.

Israel carried out the raids after it said around 20 rockets were fired from Syria at its forces in the occupied Golan Heights at around midnight. Those rockets either missed their targets or were intercepted by its Iron Dome air defense system, the spokesman said.

The meeting between the two leaders, who sit on opposite sides of the conflict in Syria, also came one day after US President Donald Trump announced he would take the US out of the Iran nuclear accord - a move that was hailed by Israel but criticized by Russian Federation.

"The Iranian regime's deployment into Syria of offensive rocket and missile systems aimed at Israel is an unacceptable and highly unsafe development for the entire Middle East", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said.

The Golan attack was "just further demonstration that the Iranian regime can not be trusted and another good reminder that the president made the right decision to get out of the Iran deal", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told Fox News.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the overnight attacks by Iranian forces and called on Iran to contribute to de-escalation of tensions in the region.

Despite warnings issued by Israel urging Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad not to get involved, dozens of surface-to-air missiles were also fired by the Syrian regime towards Israeli jets but were said to have been unsuccessful.

The attack on Israeli forces sparked the furious reaction of MP Yair Lapid, who was furious at the European Union for allegedly "appeasing" Iran to secure a deal on the country's nuclear programme. Because of this, Israel has every right to defend its sovereignty.

Israel struck Syrian military positions last month.

Israeli warplanes hit the rocket launcher that fired the barrage at its troops as well as dozens of other targets in Syria, including Iranian military and intelligence sites.

One of the largest of these, less than two weeks ago, may have killed Iranian personnel, causing tension to spike.

"We do not know yet the (Iranian) casualty count", he said. "We hope that Israel continues to attack Assad and Iran". There were reports that Israel's Air Force missiles targeted Iranian positions in Syria.

The third is that Russian Federation, which itself has a large military presence in Syria, will continue to indulge Israel's repeated incursions, preferring diplomatic rebukes to military confrontation. For years, Iranian proxies have attacked Israel, but this time, Israel is directly blaming Iran for the attack. Israel says its occasional strikes in Syria aim to prevent such an outcome.
