NHL: Bolts face old foe in Bruins

Even with the craziness of the skate blade incident, Game 1 was exactly what the Bruins needed from Rask after a shaky series in the first round. Fans of all 16 teams - yes, even the Canada-based Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs - had plenty to share about the games, though some had stronger reactions than others.

Do you think that the Boston Bruins win in such a lop-sided game will have an affect on the Tampa Bay Lightning's performance in Game 2?

The Bruins, who survived a seven-game series with the Leafs after losing three of four regular-season meetings to them, open a best-of-7 second-rounder against the Lightning on Saturday (3 p.m., Ch. 10, WBZ-FM 98.5) at Amalie Arena. The Bruins weren't able to get the matchup they wanted (Zdeno Chara and Charlie McAvoy against Stamkos' line) but kept the Lightning off the scoreboard with Kevan Miller and Matt Grzelcyk hanging on for dear life and Rask playing with laser focus. 5, Tampa Bay, Sergachev 2 (Point, Gourde), 13:22 (pp).

Now I would be remiss if I didn't mention the skate blade incident. He appeared to be in full meltdown mode.

"We were kind of joking around ... we were trying to lighten the mood", said Jake. When he returned to the cage, a cooler Rask did not let another goal past him. He stopped 34 shots and was a brick wall. "It was good for us and our guys finished, but we know over seven games you are not going to have the edge you want." .

Rask's biggest crime might be that he is not Tim Thomas. Maybe he gets one or two more.

But as has been the case with much of the National Hockey League this season, the game did not end without some in-game controversy.

The NHL confirmed there is no rule for referees to stop play for a broken piece of equipment, regardless of whether the equipment belongs to a goaltender or a skater.

On occasion, Rask does lose it - and it's not always a bad thing.

Bettors should definitely trust Rask more in this situation than Andersen and take Boston to win another close game at home. That catapulted the B's to an emotional win.

"Any time you get emotional like that and attached to the game like he was, it gives you extra energy and I thought he was great. But it's-I guess I just need to change my skates".

"I bet you all five games in the (first-round series against the Devils) we had more intensity than we had in Game 1 (Saturday), and it's not going to get it done", coach Jon Cooper said after practice. It was nice to see that emotion out of him and the way he stepped up in that game.

"We have a lot of experience".

It was also fun for Bergeron and company to see Rask bounce back from those tough goals to deliver a stellar outing.

"I didn't throw it at anyone", he said. "I just wanted to make sure that everybody saw that my blade was off". How is it safe for a razor blade to be lying on the ice, especially in front of the net where physicality is often increased?

On a night when some of the veterans failed and or flailed - there was a two-for-the-price-of-one Bruins' struggling when Brad Marchand was taken down as Kasperi Kapanen moved in on Rask and badly deked the goaltender for a shorthanded goal - it was the kiddos who gave you hope for the future.

As optimistic as I want to be, I simply can not see the Bruins picking up a win tonight. "We knew that they'd come out hard in the first and we'd have to try to weather the storm and gain the lead, And that's what we did".
