Facebook's Messenger Kids is getting a sleep mode

The new sleep mode will allow parents to set predetermined times that Messenger Kids can not be used, whether that's a blocked out time for homework, during the night, or other times decided upon by the guardian.

Announced on Friday, Facebook is adding a sleep mode to Messenger Kids. The new option is being controlled by a parent from the Parent Control center in the parent's Facebook account.

When the Messenger Kids app is in Sleep Mode, kids will be unable to send or receive messages or video calls. Even if the kid tries to open the app while it in "sleep mode", a message will pop up telling him/her to come back later. Google hopes this is another step in the right direction of making YouTube Kids a safe-space for the 11 million children who watch videos in the app every week.

Parents can use this feature by enabling this feature from their accounts. You will be allowed to create different settings for weekdays and weekends.

Since the app was released parents have blocked and flagged thousands of videos for being "fake" copies of their kids' favorite cartoon characters. Still, some parents found disturbing videos were making it into the app and were viewable because they were not caught by the human curators. "Once you set the limits, the child will not be able to use the app during those hours", Govindarajan wrote.

Since its launch in December 2017, Messenger Kids is facing widespread criticism for encouraging children to join social media.

The main idea of Messenger Kids is the parental control of the time kids are spending on Facebook Messenger.

The app is fully dedicated to the Children under the age 13. They also cannot use the camera, or receive notifications.

On the other hand, Facebook claims that very little data is being collected in the Messenger Kids app and that the data is being collected for operational purposes or to ensure a good experience within the app. By adding new features to this Children app, the giant is trying to make it more efficient for the existing users of the app.
