At 09:18 am, the S&P BSE Sensex was trading 29.43 points lower at 34,587.21.

The markets had opened in the red in morning but recovered soon enough as the BSE index extended gains to nearly 250 points, hitting the day-high of 34,663.95. Meanwhile, shares of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on Monday surged over 4 per cent, following which the IT major became the first listed Indian company to hit market capitalisation of over United States dollars 100 billion (Rs 6,80,912.10 crore).

Index heavyweights Reliance Industries, HDFC and ICICI Bank helped the Nifty close above 10,600-mark for the first time since February 5, 2018, though the pressure in metals and technology stocks capped upside.

The Nifty50 closed higher by 20.65 points or 0.20 per cent at 10,584.70 points, while the Sensex closed at 34,450.77 points - up 35.19 points or 0.10 per cent.

The BSE IT index rose after rupee fell to a 14-month low of 66.825 against the dollar on bouts of month-end dollar demand from importers amid crude price volatility and rising United States bond yields.

About 1,478 shares declined against 1,179 advancing shares on the BSE.
