"His departure was calm and he was surrounded the whole time by his family and his closest friends", Forman's wife Martina told Czech news agency CTK.

"I can confirm the news", added the director's Czech agent Radka Kadlecova, as Forman's official Facebook page displayed a black square in the place of his profile picture, complete with the dates of birth and death.

The Czech-born director died in the US after a brief illness, his wife, Martina, told Czech news agency CTK, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In an obituary on Twitter, Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas labelled the cigar-smoking director a "genius of cinematography".

"Milos loved life. I will miss his laughter", he added. "Milos will remain dear in my heart", Jacob tweeted in French. It captured seven Academy Awards, including best picture, best director and best actor (for F. Murray Abraham as Salieri).

He followed up his success in 1979 with a film adaptation of the hit musical "Hair", and then in 1981 with an adaptation of E. L. Doctorow's novel "Ragtime".
