USA drops travel ban for citizens of Chad

The controversial travel ban had restricted citizens from Chad from entering the US.

US President Donald Trump has lifted travel restrictions on Chad, saying the Central African country had "improved its identity-management and information sharing practices".

The White House said Chad had increased cooperation with USA security bodies and dealt with deficiencies in vetting citizens leaving the country.

"The president announced today that Chad has raised its security standards to meet important baseline U.S. national security requirements", the Department of Homeland Security announced, AFP reported.

One of the major reasons why Chad was blacklisted was a lack of passport paper that prevented it from supplying the Homeland Security Department with a required sample of the document, the Associated Press reported.

The Department of Homeland Security has maintained that the ban focused on getting countries to improve information on their citizens and cooperation on travel databases, to meet U.S. security standards.

USA officials also added that the African nation was unable to adequately share public safety and terrorism-related information with who screen foreigners seeking to enter the country.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is lifting the travel ban on the African country of Chad, effective Friday.

The ban has caused outrage since its introduction because many believed it targeted Muslims and contravened the USA constitution and United States laws.

They said it sets an example for other countries on the list, which include Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, and North Korea.

Chadian Foreign Minister Cherif Mahamat Zene expressed pleasure with the news, tweeting that Chad "hopes to further strengthen the strategic partnership and cooperation between the 2 countries". In December, the high court said the latest version of the ban could be fully enforced while appeals make their way through the courts.

The Supreme Court is expected to decide the legality of Trump's travel bans in the coming months.

The ban was applied in a limited way to officials from certain Venezuelan government agencies as well.
