Iran says Syria gas attack reports 'excuse' for military action

Minister al-Moallem reviewed the latest developments in political fields and on the ground in Syria in light of the important military victories achieved by the Syrian Arab Army and its allies, praising the support provided by Iran to Syria in all fields.

Early Monday, Israel targeted the Syrian regime's T-4 military air base in Homs, killing at least seven Iranian personnel.

At a previous confrontation in February, Israel mentioned it took down an Iranian drone flying to its air space on an identical day which Syrian anti aircraft fire attracted an Israeli f16 jet which has been assaulting the positions of Iran-backed forces in Syria. Iran may have been provoking an Israeli response, demonstrating a growing willingness to use Syria as a base to challenge Israel directly.

Responding to the strike, Velayati told IRNA "Defenders of the holy shrines are still standing by the Syrian people and government and will continue their fight against the enemies of the Islamic Ummah, particularly the Zionist regime and its masters". Syria's air defense systems shot down five of the eight missiles fired, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

A number of non-government organizations, including the White Helmets, allege that a chemical weapons attack took place in Eastern Ghouta's town of Douma on April 7.

The news agency also quoted Qasemi as saying that the reports of the gas attack "do not match facts". Israel viewed that and all other Iranian military forces in Syria as an unacceptable threat to the security fo the Jewish state.
