Man contracts world's first drug-resistant case of 'super gonorrhea'

Public Health England issued a warning stating that a British man had been infected with a case of "super" gonorrhea, named as such because the bacteria had shown complete resistance to the recommended dual first-line therapy.

Public Health England released the first global report of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea.

Dr Hughes added: 'PHE actively monitors, and acts on, the spread of antibiotic resistance in gonorrhoea and potential treatment failures, and has introduced enhanced surveillance to identify and manage resistant strains of infection promptly to help reduce further spread'.

"We are investigating a case who has gonorrhoea which was acquired overseas and is very resistant to the recommended first line treatment", Dr Gwenda Hughes, the head of PHE's STI section said. Unfortunately, that man didn't get any treatment as both azithromycin and ceftriaxione failed to cure the disease.

"This report is one more confirmation of our greatest fear: drug-resistant gonorrhea spreading around the globe", said David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors.

He first visited a health clinic for treatment in early 2018.

He will be tested again in April. Now, with 78 million people contracting the sexually transmited disease each year, the disease is quickly evolving past how we treat it. Health officials are now tracing other sexual partners of the man in an attempt to contain the infection's spread. The disease is caused by the bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae and is spread through unprotected vaginal, oral and anal sex.

Doctors are investigating this case to make sure that the transmission risk is minimized as much as possible.

Symptoms of the nasty infection include a burning sensation when urinating and unusual discharge from the penis or vagina.

Thailand launched a localised version of the World Health Organization project Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (GASP) in 2015 to help track the emergence and spread of resistance to treatments in gonorrhoea.

Medical experts warn that when the condition is not treated, it can sometimes lead to infertility in both men and women, other infections throughout the body, as well as an increased risk of HIV/AIDS.

We reported to you a year ago that antibiotic-resistant strains of gonorrhoea were becoming more common. On top of that, there are three new candidate drugs for the disease in development.
