Snow and ice warning for Sussex

The Met Office has now issued an amber warning for London and the south east, up from a yellow one put out earlier in the week, meaning there is an increased likelihood of bad weather affecting the area.

Saturday and Sunday are expected to see a continuation of snow showers as bitterly cold winds bring freezing temperatures from Scandinavia.

The advice is valid from Friday, March 16 9am to Sunday 18 March 2018 11:59pm.

The snowstorm has also prompted the Met Office to bump up its alerts to yellow and amber as a blanket of snow sweeps in from the East threatening to paralyse the United Kingdom and bring the country to a total standstill.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Snow showers are likely to continue throughout Sunday, with a chance that longer spells of snow may affect southern regions for a time on Sunday".

Strong easterly winds will lead to some temporary blizzard conditions and drifting of snow.

It has told Londoners to gear up for travel disruption too, with delays and cancellations to rail and air travel deemed likely.

Organisers of this weekend's Lincoln 10K road race have said they are monitoring the forecast and will be notifying participants of any changes to the event.
