Murder of Councilwoman Puts Pressure on Rio's Security Intervention

Marielle Franco, 38, a Rio de Janeiro City Council member, and her driver, Anderson Pedro Gomes, 39, were gunned down on March 14, 2018, after a auto pulled alongside theirs and opened fire.

No suspects have been announced by police, but Ms Franco, who was 38, had ruffled many feathers - and that was her mission.

Ms. Franco's driver, Anderson Pedro Gomes, was also killed, when a vehicle pulled up next to theirs at a downtown intersection and someone shot nine bullets into the auto, five of which reportedly hit Ms. Franco in the head.

"It is far too soon to say, but we are obviously looking at this as a murder in response to her political work, that is a main theory", said a Rio de Janeiro public prosecutor, who spoke on condition that he not be named as he was not authorised to discuss the case. Her driver, Anderson Pedro Gomes, was also killed, and an aide was injured.

Rio's mayor, Marcelo Crivella, declared three days of mourning after Franco's death, and vowed that the perpetrators would face justice.

Rest in Power: #MarielleFranco, black councilwoman critical of military police actions and anti-black genocide, was just assassinated in Rio deJaneiro, Brazil. She was shot at around 9:30 p.m. Thursday in Estacio, a downtown neighbourhood, as she was returning from an event about empowering black women in Brazil, a cause she passionately championed.

"One more homicide of a young man who may be coming in for the PM's account... Meanwhile, the military intervention (in Rio de Janeiro state) search book sacks of kids who live in favelas". Franco, part of a commission to oversee the military intervention, harshly criticized the move on Sunday, saying it could worsen police violence against residents. Perhaps. In her first political campaign, Franco won 46,000 votes, more than all but four of Rio's 51 city legislators.

Dion Lewis to sign with Tennessee Titans
Teammates nicknamed him "Strap" because of his ability to closely cover receivers and also "Scrap" for his scrappy style of play. Butler was released by the Patriots after a season in which he tallied 55 tackles, two interceptions and 12 passes defensed.

To be sure, not all Brazilians mourned Franco's death.

Officials have confirmed that it appears Franco was specifically targeted and not shot in a random attack. "Matheus Melo was walking out of church". "This week two youth were killed and tossed into a ditch".

Instead of turning her back on politics, she embraced it. Franco earned a diploma from one of the country's most prestigious universities before jumping into the national debate and then into electoral politics.

Protests were planned in several cities Thursday evening, and Franco's party called for a march in Rio on Friday.

Franco was a beacon of hope of the people of Rio, which is plagued by a plethora of issues including poverty.

Amnesty International have expressed condemnation at the councillor's murder and called for the authorities to investigate the fatal shootings.

The military intervention has sparked widespread concern, including from UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al Hussein, who said soldiers "are not specialised in public security or investigation".
