Thousands of Indian farmers march to Mumbai seeking govt support

Mumbai: Thousands of Maharashtra's farmers on a long march to Mumbai arrived at the entry points of the city on Sunday, ready to proceed to the state legislature building in South Mumbai on Monday to demand a complete loan waiver and better prices for their produce.

Over 35,000 farmers from across Maharashtra, who embarked on a "Long March" from Nashik on 6.

On Monday, the march will be addressed by AIKS national president Ashok Dawale, CPI (M) MLA JP Gavit, state president Kisan Gujar and working president Arjun Ade among others. Farmers are reaching the city in batches and on Monday they plan to march to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly pressing for their demands.

"The government is pro-rich and anti-poor".

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said that he will discuss the grievances of the farmers with a group of ministers and the representatives of the farmers.

The farmers wearing a red cap and waving flags and sickles have marched from Nashik to Bhiwandi in the last few days and are about to reach the state assembly and finish their exhaustive 180km march to Mumbai. So far, banks have been permitted to grant loan waiver to 46.34 lakh farm loan accounts, amounting to ₹23,102 crore.

Signalling a softening of the stance, Dhawale said the AIKS wants to find a feasible solution for the issues faced by the farmers.

Aware of farmers' anger, the government in its budget presented on 9 March took a clear farm sector focus. "The BJP government is trying to turn farmers into beggars". The farmers also want pension from the State Government. "We are ready to discuss with the government but will not withdraw the protest". None of them have reached out to the government.

"I have injured my feet due to excessive walking, but I will continue to protest until our demands are met", she said.

Aditya Thackeray, chief of Yuva Sena, too, joined the march at Vikhroli and assured the protestors that the Sena is with the farmers, even though the agitation is being spearheaded by the CPM under the umbrella of the Kisan Sabha.
