The Hill: GOP leaders signal they will try to narrow Trump's tariffs

The rebellion is swelling among members of the US Congress's Republican majority dismayed over Donald Trump's contentious new trade tariffs, with many elected officials threatening to block the president's decree.

"I don't think the president is going to be easily deterred", said Sen. "I don't think we're at the point where we need to consider that bill yet", said Sen.

Senator Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican, called the tariffs "a marriage of two lethal poisons to economic growth - protectionism and uncertainty".

"This was a big payment, $130,000 payment, to keep information away from voters that voters probably would have cared about when they were walking into the election booth back in November of 2016", Ryan said.

"Congress can not be complicit as the administration courts economic disaster", the Arizona senator said.

"I urge my colleagues to pass it before this exercise in protectionism inflicts any more damage on the economy", Flake said in a statement.

The US leader has triggered howls of protest in his own camp by slapping tariffs of 25 percent on imports of steel and 10 percent on aluminum on Thursday, with only Canada and Mexico exempt for the time being. The European Union, for example, has threatened tariffs on Harley Davidson, which is based in Wisconsin, and bourbon, for which Kentucky is famous.

Historically proponents of free trade, several Republicans dubbed the measures "stupid" and "misguided" - if the United States increases the cost of both materials, they hold, American producers of vehicles and other products will suffer setbacks on the worldwide playing field, and consumers will pay more. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) lamented Thursday. "I just haven't persuaded him yet". While lawmakers technically could try to counter Trump on trade with some kind of legislative response, there's no clarity about what that would look like, and what kind of precedent it would set. But there are few signs on Capitol Hill of the political will to pass a bill to rein in Trump and avert a trade war.

Even if Flake does convince the Senate to take action, it would take two-thirds vote to override a potential veto from the president.

"It's a conundrum, really, because you do not want 100 senators and our counterparts in the House doing basically any trade initiative". Paul Seamus Ryan, the Vice President of Policy and Litigation at watchdog nonprofit Common Cause, told ThinkProgress that the payment Trump's attorney made to Daniels may have violated federal law, depending on where the money came from.

"I disagree with this action and fear its unintended consequences", the speaker of the House said in a statement while welcoming the temporary exemptions granted to Mexico and Canada.
