Samsung Galaxy S9 now comes in a Microsoft flavor

While Qualcomm and Synaptics have come up with the in-display fingerprint technology, it's still not up to the mark for use in flagship premium smartphones from Samsung.

An in-display fingerprint sensor is among the latest and most talked about technologies that the smartphone manufacturers have to offer in terms of the hardware. Vivo is a much smaller company than Samsung with less R&D resources at its disposal; and Samsung's next Note device isn't expected to launch until the second half of this year, offering the company a lot of time to get this technology right.

When Samsung's Galaxy S8 came out previous year, the world of technology assumed that the virtual home button could pave the way to an in-display fingerprint sensor embedded in the Galaxy Note 8. According to a research note obtained by MacRumors, Samsung could be facing too many technological issues while working on incorporating the feature.

The feature was once again missing in the Galaxy S9, and it was suggested that the technology will finally launch on the Galaxy Note 9.

New Leak Suggest Galaxy Note 9 has In Display Fingerprint Sensor
Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Might Not Have In-Display Fingerprint Scanner, Analyst Says

According to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via AppleInsider), who previously speculated himself that the phone would have the sensor, Samsung is postponing the feature due to technical difficulties.

The KGI analysis reported that Samsung may be skipping this feature for the Note 9 because current ultrasonic and optical sensing solutions do not "meet Samsung's technical requirements". He also claimed that the feature now suffers from problems with screen protectors as well as different environments affecting the success rate of the sensor, which could turn out to be Samsung's reason for removing the technology.

When in-display fingerprint readers will make their way to the masses is anyone's guess.

Regardless of the reports, Kuo is positive about the technology and believes that Samsung will be the first to pioneer the under-display fingerprint scanner for OLED displays.
