Childlike laughter reported coming from Amazon speakers

Amazon confirmed on Wednesday that some of its Echo smart speakers were having random - and creepy - fits of laughter.

"We're aware of this and working to fix it", the company told The Verge in a statement.

In a thread on Reddit, at least two users reported experiencing similar, unprompted laughing from Alexa but did not provide a timeframe for when the incident occurred.

You can now tune in to the Liverpool Echo's early-morning news headlines on the Amazon Echo and other Alexa-enabled devices.

The short laugh that users have recorded and posted on Twitter consists of three closely-spaced "ha-ha ha's". These bouts of laughter could be a byproduct of Echo devices mistakenly hearing their wake words in the muffled sounds of a home. "Tonight, while sleeping, i closed my eyes and said "Alexa, lamp off.' I heard a woman laugh, and lights were still on". Some claim Alexa laughed in response to unrelated or misunderstood commands, while others claim Alexa simply laughed out of the blue.

It's also not unheard of to have people talk to users through their Echo devices.

Amazon had no comment on what, exactly, the problem is, or when it might be fixed.
