Former Seattle Seahawks and Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell was also considered along with Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan and New Orleans Saints tight ends coach Dan Campbell, according to various reports.

Minnesota, though, is not releasing Stefanski from his coaching contract to pursue the opportunity in NY unless it is able to hire Philadelphia quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo away from the Eagles to replace Shurmur.

The move by the Vikings comes as a bit of a surprise.

One major hurdle-Minnesota promoting him to replace Shurmur as the team's offensive coordinator-has been cleared, with ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting that the Vikings have made a decision to hire Philadelphia's quarterbacks coach, John DeFilippo, to take over as the team's playcaller.

Shurmur and Stefanski helped the Vikings get the most out of backup Case Keenum this past season.

Shurmur and Stefanski first met with the Eagles 2005, when the former was quarterbacks coach and latter was an operations intern. By all other accounts, Shurmur was a big reason for the improvements on the Vikings offense this season and he is now gone. That experience can be an important step toward becoming a head coach.

With Stefanski losing out for the position, he is in line to rejoin Shurmur and become the Giants' offensive coordinator.

Stefanski joined the Vikings in 2006 after Brad Childress was hired as coach. Stefanski climbed his way up Minnesota's coaching ranks and replaced the fired Scott Turner working with Vikings quarterbacks in 2017. Stefanski's title was assistant to the head coach through the 2008 season and this meant taking care of a variety of jobs. "I said, 'I don't even want to talk about it, because the more I talk about it, that's time I'm taking away from the quarterbacks of the Philadelphia Eagles.' That's not fair to them, that's not fair to the team". "Nonetheless, if the Vikings were going to tell Stefanski they didn't think he was good enough to be their coordinator, it is a slap to now make him stick around in a lesser position".

There will be no pillaging of the Vikings, at least as far as the Giants' offensive coordinator position is concerned. I would offer that you better have the current quarterbacks coach, Kevin Stefanski, just as heavily involved in that discussion.
