Goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah gave them a comfortable win at St Mary's, but just a week after beating Manchester City in January, Liverpool were back to losing ways and Jamie Carragher thought the loss was typical with a larger problem they have.

Salah set up the Brazilian for the opener just seven minutes in and the Egyptian winger grabbed his 22nd league goal of the season shortly before half-time thanks to a clever assist from Firmino. Not a lot of people pegged him as the 20-goal-a-season striker Liverpool supposedly needed but, here we are in February, and Firmino has 20 goals.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists Arsenal are still in the fight for a top four position in the Premier League despite his side building a nine-point gap on their rivals.

Klopp's side could have added further gloss to the scoreline as they missed a couple more opportunities, but Southampton never looked like fighting back and Liverpool successfully capitalised on United's 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United earlier on Sunday. "The only thing we can do is win our games, but it will stay tight until the end".

Van Dijk began the move as he cut out a cross with his head before Liverpool 'keeper Loris Karius freed another former Southampton player Alex Oxlade Chamberlain.

Salah received the ball from Joel Matip around 30 yards out from goal and was allowed to turn and play a short pass into Firmino's feet.

Southampton versus Liverpool games are like a derby nowadays so the fans and players should be well up for this one.

Having ended their 12-game winless run with victory at West Bromwich Albion last week, the Saints will be looking to secure back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since April 2017.
