Durham Student Crushed In Nightclub Queue
Police are investigating whether a barrier played a role in the death of a 20-year-old student who reportedly died from a head injury last night. People were trying to reason with them, telling the bouncers it wasn't safe and someone was going to get hurt.
In a number of heartbreaking tributes posted on social media, friends describe the student as "a bright, handsome and kind person".
'Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Olivia at this sad time'.
She was pulled out with a bleeding wound as a doorman and one of her friends tried to resuscitate her, but she died soon afterwards.
'A joint investigation is ongoing between ourselves and Durham County Council to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident'.
"She had lost consciousness and he started giving CPR and was helped by other doormen until the ambulance arrived".
A fellow student, who was in the queue at the same time, told the Guardian they were "completely at the mercy of the crowd" during the crush that led to a barrier collapsing next to Burt. It is believed several people also fell over after being pushed and ended up falling on top of one another.
Police say the incident took place just before midnight on Wednesday, the night of the Game Over event that Missoula markets as Durham's biggest student night.
"There were too many people and he couldn't get them off her".

Another reason for considering her position: the SPD leadership has proven a poisoned chalice for her six predecessors. Under the coalition agreement, the SPD will retain control of the foreign, justice and labour ministries among others.
Another student, called Emily, who was in the club at the time, told how those inside where evacuated following the incident.
"Many people were sobbing, guys and girls, and everyone was hugging each other and making sure their friends were okay".
"There were about 600 people inside the club".
Owen Adams, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Colleges and Student Experience, Durham University, said: 'We are extremely shocked and saddened by the death of a Durham University student in Durham City last night.
Phoenix Security which provides security for the venue declined to comment on the incident.
Forensic experts were conducting a search of the scene yesterday as police launched a probe amid claims the tragedy happened after a group of male students pushed from the rear of the crowd.
"Until that is concluded we are unable to comment further".
