Joker origin movie may get Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role

Back in September, it was reported that Warner Bros. was developing a stand-alone Joker origin film that would not take place in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) continuity to be directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover).

People weren't necessarily thrilled to hear that the Joker is getting a standalone movie, but fans can rest assured that the supervillain will be played by a talented actor.

To be clear, this will be a wholly separate film from anything in the DCEU, including Suicide Squad and whatever Jared Leto is doing with the character in those series of film. Leonardo Dicaprio was the first person approached to star in Phillip's standalone film, but that didn't pan out.

Hard for Manchester United to catch 'almost perfect' City, says Wayne Rooney
Rooney feels Kane should be the man to captain England at this summer's World Cup because of his natural leadership qualities. Rooney went on to win 16 trophies over the course of the next 12 seasons and became the club's record goalscorer.

In the wake of a troubling roll-out for their extended universe, including the poorly received "Justice League" and "Suicide Squad", and the massive success of "Wonder Woman", Vulture reported previous year that DC and Warner Bros. were rethinking their approach to the films. Heath Ledger set a perhaps unsurpassable bar for Joker performances in Christopher Nolan's trilogy, yet Phoenix is bound to have a compelling take on the role.

But now you can consider us slightly more on board with Phillips' Joker idea given who is in talks to take on the role of the Clown Prince of Crime. Sources told Variety the movie will be set in the 1980s and will play more like a straight crime drama than a flashy superhero film. For his work as an actor, Phoenix has received a Grammy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and has three Academy Award and British Academy Film Award nominations.

The Joker movie doesn't have a title and is part of the ever-swirling lineup of DC movies in some stage of development at Warner Bros.
