USA military kills 100 Syrian soldiers after 'unprovoked attack'

The US-led Coalition against ISIS in Syria attacked pro-regime forces in air and artillery strikes on Wednesday, the Coalition said in a statement.

America launched airstrikes on Syrian government-backed troops Wednesday after they attacked Syrian opposition forces who were accompanied by US advisers in Deir el-Zour Province, according to USA officials. Nevertheless, the official said the USA is looking into whether Russian-affiliated forces may have been involved.

No US service personnel were injured or killed but one SDF member was wounded.

The US maintains about 2,000 troop in Syria which mostly work with the over 50,000-strong Syrian Democratic Forces, a mix of Kurdish and Arab fighters and have been the primary US-backed force fighting ISIS in Syria.

US-led coalition forces, who typically advise and assist SDF troops, conducted airstrikes against the Syrian forces who attacked their "well established" headquarters.

A U.S. official told CNN that the attackers crossed the Euphrates River and were armed with artillery and other weapons.

The coalition said the attack took place in the Middle Euphrates River Valley, eight kilometers east of the agreed upon "de-confliction" line which is created to separate Russian-backed regime troops and US-backed forces in Syria.

Syrian state news agency SANA, citing an army statement said its air defence units "destroyed most of" the Israeli missiles.

"Coalition officials were in regular communication with Russian counterparts before, during and after the thwarted (enemy) attack", the official said.

A military official, who provided information about the attack on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it on the record, said the attacking forces initiated the assault by lobbing artillery at the SDF and US forces, who were located eight miles east of the Euphrates River.

The attack on the SDF headquarters east of the Euphrates River was well coordinated and involved T-54 and T-72 tanks, as well as artillery.
