Center Mike Fisher coming out of retirement, will join Preds

Fisher was named team captain at the beginning of the 2016-2017 National Hockey League season but, after the Preds lost the Stanley Cup Final in six games to the Penguins, began publicly hinting at retirement. A few days ago, Fisher finally made official what wife Carrie Underwood has been urging him to do - come back for one last run and a chance to actually hoist that Stanley Cup.

Fisher announced he was retiring in August, following the Predators' stunning run to the Stanley Cup Final past year.

Fisher has 276 goals and 309 assists in 1,088 regular-season games over 17 seasons with the Ottawa Senators and Predators. He wrote in The Tennessean that he believed the organization would bring home a title and that no one would "be happier than I will be to see it happen".

Former Predators captain Mike Fisher is coming out of retirement and rejoining the Preds as an active player. "I'll get there, I'll get there". "But we didn't win previous year, and it was the best time in my career and we didn't win". That's part of the reason I want to come back.

Predators head coach Peter Laviolette praised Fisher's return to the club, as his presence is expected not only to help the team in a battle toward the playoffs, but to boost overall morale for the club.

Indeed, Fisher intends to begin skating and working out on his own before joining the entire team for practices.

Mike will not return to being team captain, as the team's general manager David Pile said the honor remains with defenseman Roman Josi.

Fisher has 51 points in 134 career playoff games.

"I just thought about the opportunity, how good this team is", he said.

The same can't be said for the power play, however, as Nashville will nearly certainly give Fisher a shot at skating with the man advantage. If Laviolette chooses to play Fisher down the middle, he'll be able to run a four-center group that consists of Ryan Johansen, Kyle Turris, Nick Bonino and Fisher.

Nashville's fifth leading goal-scorer in franchise history with 109 tallies to his name, Fisher was primarily utilized as the second or third center in past seasons with the Predators.
