A cosmic event not seen in 36 years - a rare "super blood blue moon" - may be glimpsed on Wednesday, January 31 in parts of western North America, Asia, the Middle East, Russia and Australasia.

"This is also the second full moon of January which makes it a blue moon, and it's also one of the more closer full moons of the year so, some people might even be calling it a so-called supermoon as well".

WINDSOR JOHNSTON, BYLINE: Stargazers will be able to view a supermoon, blue moon and a total lunar eclipse all within a 24-hour period.

For those unable to view the statistical anomaly on their own, NASA will offer a live feed of the event starting at 5:30 am EST on 31 January 2018.

Residents of the western United States, Alaska and Hawaii will have the best chance to see the full lunar eclipse.

The next eclipse visible from western Kentucky will be a total lunar eclipse on January 21, 2019.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the earth's shadow, resulting in a reddish glow over the moon's surface. For those living in the lower 48, the best viewing will take place in the west, so book a flight, set your Global Positioning System for a nice drive, or just long online, to see this lunar trifecta that will take place in just a few days. And, unlike a solar eclipse, no special glasses are required.

What is a total lunar eclipse?

That means that if you live in the Eastern part of the USA, your best bet is to get as high as you can and have a clear line of sight to the horizon in the west-northwest.

"Expect to see what you see on a full moon day; in fact, on the 31st, the moon will be less bright than it usually is since there will be the earth's shadow on it". Right now, I'd say we have a 50/50 shot for good to decent viewing conditions. It'll be a long wait for skywatchers in the U.S. as Johnston predicts the next visible lunar eclipse will be on January 21, 2019.

This type of eclipse occurs when the sun, earth and moon are aligned in a straight line and the earth is between the sun and the moon. Staff will have telescopes available so friends and family can get a closer look at the moon.
