Republicans Are Worried About This Democrat's Special Election Win

Governor Scott Walker, a Republican who won election in 2010 and is seeking reelection in November, took to Twitter on Tuesday night with a somewhat ominous assessment: "Senate District 10 special election win by a Democrat is a wake up call for Republicans in Wisconsin", he wrote.

Schachtner defeated Republican state Rep. Adam Jarchow Tuesday in a race to replace Republican Sheila Harsdorf, who is now state ag secretary.

On election night, Schachtner said her win sends a message that voters are exhausted of negative politics. Conservative groups spent over $130,000 on campaign ads for Jarchow-more than three times what Democratic groups spent to support Schachtner. "People came out and voted for change and I think that's really important". Republicans will go into the fall campaign season with an 18-14 majority with one vacancy.

In Wisconsin's 10 District, that overperformance resulted in a Democratic pickup (points colored in dark blue), but Republicans have been underperforming in many seats that they still managed to hold (colored pink).

Still, democrats say Tuesday's special election is part of a bigger picture.

Specifically, in most congressional and state legislative special elections (each one is a point), Democrats outperformed Hillary Clinton's 2016 showing (points that are higher indicate a greater Democratic overperformance; points that are lower indicate that the Republican outperformed Trump). As the chief medical examiner for St. Croix County, and a former first responder, Schachtner said she never once asked someone their political affiliation before providing care, and she doesn't care to do so now. In South Carolina's 99th House District, Democrat Cindy Boatwright lost with 43 percent of the vote; the party had not run a candidate for the seat in this decade. Schachtner says her victory could be a bad sign for Republicans statewide.

Dinesh Karthik will replace injured Wriddhiman Saha in India's Test squad for the third and final Test against South Africa. Dinesh Karthik and Murali Vijay were both great friends as they played together for the Ranji team of Tamil Nadu.

"Democrats from rural areas face an existential crisis", says the report.

The Republican governor later added, "WAKE UP CALL: Can't presume that voters know we are getting positive things done in Wisconsin".

He did not blame Trump by name, but said there is "frustration overall" with Washington.

"To me it's a huge loss for Governor Walker and the republicans, and people clearly want change and I think we're going to build on that come next fall and it will favor on the side of democrats", said Democratic State Senator Dave Hansen (District 30).

"From collective bargaining reform and Right to Work to welfare reform, everything we have done is at risk if we don't win in November", Walker said Wednesday in a fundraising letter.
