Golden Globes 2018: Seth Meyers' Opening Monologue - Grade It!

During the opening monologue of the 75th Golden Globe Awards, host Seth Meyers addressed the growing unrest in Hollywood after a year riddled with stories of sexual assault and harassment, as well as claims of gender inequality. "Harvey Weinstein isn't here tonight because I've heard he's insane and hard to work with".

Seth Meyers's job tonight at the 75th Golden Globes awards is not enviable: It's been a dark year for the industry the show celebrates, and he's gotta go up there and tell jokes.

He said when he heard the premise of the fantasy-drama The Shape of Water, a movie that leads the night with seven Golden Globe nominations, "I have to admit when I first heard about a film when a naive young girl falls in love with a disgusting sea monster I thought, 'Oh man, not another Woody Allen movie'".

Meyers' words are especially pointed given the often loose, celebratory style of seasonal awards shows and how hosts can often whiff when attempting to strike at the establishment. Just as it has dominated the news cycle in recent months, it absolutely dominated his monologue, but in such a way that he got genuine laughs from the audience, with only a few groans of discomfort.

"It's 2018 marijuana is finally allowed and sexual harassment finally isn't". He also poked fun at alleged sexual assaulter Kevin Spacey, who was replaced in the film "All The Money in the World" by Christopher Plummer.

Meyers said Weinstein would have his comeback to Hollywood "in 20 years when he's the first person ever booed during the In Memoriam". "Good evening ladies and remaining gentlemen".

"There's a new era underway and I can tell because it's been years since a white man was this nervous in Hollywood", he added. "Remember when he was the one making trouble with North Korea?" For example, I was happy to hear they're going to do another season of "House of Cards".

Some of the highlights included, as can be expected from the hold-nothing-back late-night host, major digs at numerous accused men in Hollywood.

He also mocked Spacey's Southern accent in the show, adding.

He joked that producers asked a woman to host the show."They really did".

In his 10-minute plus spiel, Meyers took aim at Hollywood's powerful men and the sexual abuses many of them have been accused of. Meanwhile, Bert and Ernie have been doing a parody of Call Me By Your Name for years.

Billed as the most raucous event in the showbiz calendar, the champagne-drenched Hollywood Foreign Press Association's annual prize-giving is a draw for filmmakers and actors looking to create some buzz ahead of the Oscars in March.
