Cubs will benefit from Pirates trading Gerrit Cole to Astros

The Houston Astros have agreed to a deal for Pittsburgh Pirates ace Gerrit Cole, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

The New York Post also reported the trade.

This would be an major get for an Astros team that already boasts former Cy Young winners Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel atop its rotation. Passan did note that "generally, this sort of thing winds up with a deal being consummated".

Cole is coming off a season where he posted a 12-12 record with a 4.26 ERA.

NFL Wild Card Preview: Panthers at Saints
The 6-foot-7, 316-pound Peat was the Saints' first-round draft pick in 2015 out of Stanford, where he played left tackle. Meanwhile, Carolina quarterback Cam Newton was very bad , passing for just 167 yards and three interceptions.

Still, they continue to be in the market for another starting pitcher, and Cole fits what they are looking for, since he is 27 and has two more years of control before free agency. He was an all-star in 2015.

The Astros would hope that Cole bounces back to his form from 2013-2016 when he had a 3.23 ERA over 579 1/3 innings of work. He helped lead the Pirates to the postseason, but he coughed up four earned runs in five innings during a loss against the Chicago Cubs in the National League Wild Card Game.

However, the right-handed hurler has slipped some in recent years. But this is a clear suggestion that the Pirates are in rebuild mode.
