Ibuprofen May Affect Men's Sexual Health, Study Finds

Ibuprofen belongs to a group of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, or NSAIDs, that work by blocking the production of hormone-like signaling molecules called prostaglandins, which theoretically reduces pain and inflammation. While the testosterone levels in the men taking ibuprofen had not changed, researchers found their pituitary glands were boosting testosterone production anyway, inducing the compensated hypogonadism.

Researchers found that young men who took ibuprofen in doses commonly used by athletes developed a hormonal condition linked to reduced fertility.

Advil and Motrin are two brand names for ibuprofen. "The decrease in the free testosterone/LH ratio resulted primarily from the increased LH levels, revealing that testicular responsiveness to gonadotropins likely declined during the ibuprofen exposure", the authors write.

On a positive note, the disorder remains totally reversible when the ibuprofen is taken over a brief period, Bernard Jégou, a co-author at French National Institute of Health and Medical Research, told CNN.

With regard to long-term ibuprofen use, "It is also of concern that men with compensated hypogonadism may eventually progress to overt primary hypogonadism". Before he stepped down in November 2016 he asked players about their use of over-the-counter painkillers and found that almost half of those who played in the past three World Cups took anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, every day. "These compounds are good painkillers, but a certain amount of people in society use them without thinking of them as proper medicines".

Even though this was a small study and further research is needed, the findings are important because ibuprofen is one of the most widely-used medications, Erma Drobnis, an associate professional practice professor of reproductive medicine and fertility at the University of Missouri, Columbia, told CNN.

A spokesperson for the major manufacturers of over-the-counter drugs disputes the study. In common terms, the man's testicles don't secrete enough testosterone and the ability to produce sperm is impaired.

The study - conducted by a team of researchers in Denmark and France - was placebo-controlled and recruited 31 healthy white males between the ages 18 and 35 years.
