Packers hire new general manager, John Schneider safe in Seattle

Gutekunst takes over for Ted Thompson, who was reassigned to a senior advisor role last week.

Gutekunst has been with the Packers since 1999 when he joined the team as a scout.

With Brian Gutekunst securing the job, only five days after it officially was open, Ball's candidacy has collapsed.

It's unclear what the development means for Ball or Eliot Wolf, the director of football operations and, technically, a superior to Gutekunst.

He was also considered one of the frontrunners for the job with the San Francisco 49ers a year ago that eventually went to John Lynch.

NFL Network was the first to report that the Packers sought permission but were denied. The Packers had interest in Seahawks general manager John Schneider, a Green Bay native, but the team's request to interview Schneider was denied. Green Bay has yet to confirm the promotion.

It was not immediately known if the Packers would be willing to compensate the Seahawks - most likely in draft picks and money - to hire Schneider. In addition to stripping Thompson of his duties, the club is searching for new coordinators to replace Dom Capers and Edgar Bennett and several new assistants, including quarterbacks, defensive line and assistant linebackers. That is not the case, and it's unclear if Ball will stay in his current position as vice president. In Green Bay, the general manager has full authority over all football decisions, including the draft, free agency and hiring and firing of the coach.
