The Rapid City store is scheduled to close in April. The Kmart Store in Effingham is now in the closure process.

The move comes in addition to closing several of its stores in the state a year ago, including locations in Aurora and Englewood. The company declined to say how many employees would be affected by the closures, but most of the jobs are part-time positions and eligible workers will receive severance, spokesman Larry Costello said. The stores will close in mid-March and early April, respectively.

At its peak in the 2000s, there were 3,500 Sears stores and 2,171 Kmart locations throughout the country.

The Illinois-based company, which owns both Sears and Kmart brands, issued a news release Thursday with a list of stores it plans to close by May. The Hanford Sears Auto Center will close near the end of the month. Fargo also lost its Sears a year ago.

Sears Holdings Corp. announced Thursday that it is taking measures to turn around its business. Sears CEO Edward Lampert is also an investor in Seritage and chairman of the company's board. Overall sales across the USA grew by 4.9 percent from November 1 to December 24. On that list, Kmart's Portland location on Wildcat Drive, slated to close in April 2018.

Macy's announced in August it was closing 100 stores, with the remaining 11 stores closing in the first quarter of this year.
