HP recalls 50000 consumer notebooks following "overheating" concerns

HP has issued a battery recall notice for a number of its laptops and mobile workstations sold over the last two years due to concerns that the battery inside these machines could be risky and a fire hazard.

Customers can visit HP's site to learn if their battery should be replaced. HP also added that an additional 2,600 faulty batteries were sold in Canada.

HP has announced a worldwide voluntary safety recall and replacement program for certain notebook computer and mobile workstation batteries.

Around 50,000 lithium-ion batteries sold as accessories or used as replacements through HP or an authorized HP service provider are being replaced over the danger of fire and overheating.

You can check if your device is affected by heading here and downloading the HP Battery Validation Utility.

"HP has received eight reports of battery packs overheating, melting, or charring, including three reports of property damage totaling $4,500, with one report of a minor injury involving a first-degree burn to the hand", CSPC said in a statement.

Affected models include HP ProBook, HP ZBook, HP x360, HP Envy m6, HP Pavilion x360 laptops and more.

Batteries sold as replacement or accessories for the HP "XBook Studio G4" mobile workstation are also named in the commission report. Impacted customers will have their batteries replaced free of charge and may continue safely using their device by placing the battery in Safety Mode and connecting to an external power source. They were sold separately as replacement batteries.

Why this matters: Battery recalls happen every so often, often due to manufacturing issue.

For customers with further questions, HP has set up a detailed FAQ on the battery recall. If the validation tool determines that the battery needs replacement, HP will send an authorized technician to take care of it. The brand's not taking any chances now, rolling out a BIOS update which freezes affected batteries in a "Battery Safety Mode".
