The Sears at the Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing and Kmart's last Berks store in Cumru Township have again been kept off the chopping block as the Illinois-based company takes steps to stay in business.

In North Carolina, no Sears stores are slated to close, but five Kmart stores will close in April.

In the NY area, the Sears located in Hicksville, on Long Island, is expected to close, as well as one in Toms River, New Jersey.

Liquidation sales will begin as early as January 12 at the stores being closed, the company stated.

The company announced that 64 Kmart stores will be closing across the county, including a store in our area. All 103 local Sears and Kmarts, including the Ocala and Bellview locations, will shutter by May.

Sears, once one of the country's most successful retailers, has struggled with the rise of e-commerce and some management missteps.

The closures are part of an effort to "right size" its footprint and the company's finances, according to a news release.

In 2006 the company operated more than 3,000 stores in the USA and a few hundred in Canada. A company statement reported that store closures accounted for more than half of the decline.
