LG unveils world's first 88-inch 8K OLED display

South Korean technology major LG known for its prowess in LED display development has come up with a new giant super high-resolution TV with state-of-the-art technology that is for sure going to take the television viewing experience to a whole new level.

The CES arms race has begun, and the first entrant in the television competition is LG, which will be showing off an eye-popping 88-inch, 8K-resolution display at this year's show. It boasts the highest resolution with 33 million pixels (7680×4320p) - 16 times more than full HD (1920×1080p) and four times more than Ultra HD aka 4K (3840×2160p). The entertainment industry is just catching up with support for 4K and will take a bit longer to rally behind 8K at this rate. Of course, bearing in mind how incredible LG's latest OLED TVs are, there's a very good chance this new panel is the most impressive display panel the world has ever seen, period. Brands like LG, Sony and Panasonic already offer 77-inch TVs. As of now, further details regarding the 8K TV are unknown and we'll have a better knowledge about its specifications once it goes official at CES 2018.

This, if not the size alone, makes one wonder if the new TV is just to showcase the technological might of the company or if it is really meant for a commercial launch anytime soon.

It is pushing its own QLED TV, which puts a quantum dot sheet over an LCD to achieve a higher resolution.

All in all, LG's announcement comes at a time when the company is making a bigger push into OLED panels and ramping up its operations.

"The successful development of the world's first 8K OLED display is a milestone for the 8K era and underscores the exciting potential of OLED", In-Byung Kang, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at LG Display, said in a statement.

The television, which measures a huge 88 inches across in its display, packs a total of 7780 x 4320 pixels into all that screen real estate. We'll know what LG and Samsung, among others, have in store for us once CES 2018 kicks off starting January 9.
