Former soccer star George Weah wins Liberia's presidency

The Professional Football Association of Ghana (PFAG) have congratulated former FIFA Balon'dor victor George Oppong Weah for his latest election as President of Liberia.

The congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued Friday by Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president on media & publicity.

The National Elections Commission (NEC) of Liberia announced the former World, European and African Footballer of the Year as the victor, with 61,5 percent of the vote.

With 98 per cent of the votes so far counted, Mr. Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change polled 61.5 per cent.

Ms Howard-Taylor is the ex-wife of former Liberian president Charles Taylor, who is serving 50 years in a British prison for war crimes in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

In the same vein, Kosovo's former President Atifete Jahjaga, also congratulated the people of Liberia for exercising their right to vote and for making a historic step towards the consolidation of democracy in their country.

Ekweremadu also commended President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for guiding the West African nation through a peaceful presidential election and described the candidate of the ruling Unity Party, Vice President Joseph Boakai as a true statesman for his sportsmanship and respect for the ballot box in conceding defeat.

Sirleaf, he said, deserves special commendation for the statesmanship she has shown in ensuring free and fair elections that will pave the way for a peaceful transfer of political power from one democratically elected leader to another for the first time in 73 years.

Liberia's president-elect and ex-soccer star George Weah says he is "honored to join a new generation of heads of state".

"Best wishes for the success of President-elect George Weah, and Vice President-elect, Jewel Taylor".

French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the ex-star striker's victory in a tweet on Friday.

Weah adds that "we have a lot to do together to accelerate the building of tomorrow's Africa". He is the only African to win FIFA World Player of the Year.

He is set to take office in January.

Following a December 26 poll, Weah's Coalition for Democratic Change took 61.5 percent of the vote, beating Vice President Joseph Boakai's Unity Party, which got 38.5 percent.

Weah played with AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, among others.
