Florida State coming to Shreveport dogged by eligibility report

While the Seminoles are gearing up for their matchup with the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in the Independence Bowl - the school's 36th consecutive season with a bowl game - it turns out that Florida State, who finished the season at 6-6, might not be bowl eligible after all.

It's a very specific, odd wrinkle in the rule for bowl eligibility, but given the lengths that Florida State took to become bowl-eligible, fans have been quick to point to this potential hiccup in the Seminoles' postseason status.

But it all works out, except for the teams that won a necessary amount of games and were forced to sit at home while five-win Florida State gets to play in a bowl game. Delaware State's own data shows that was not the case, thus Florida State can't count their 77-6 win toward their six victories for bowl eligibility.

Florida State secured a bowl bid for a 36th consecutive season - what the school boasts as an ongoing national record - thanks to three straight wins to close out its schedule, concluding with a rescheduled game against Louisiana-Monroe on December 2.

A recent report on the website Reddit questions whether the Seminoles should even be in Shreveport for a bowl game because of NCAA rules regarding bowl eligibility. "It's too late to do anything now, they'll still play in the game".

The NCAA dictates FCS programs must meet that 90 percent threshold for a team to count towards bowl eligibility.

College football insider Brett McMurphy tweeted Thursday evening, "This should have been caught at 3 levels: FSU, ACC & NCAA", a source said. That would have meant that Florida State, which went 6-6, could not count the win against the FCS school towards the six needed to be eligible.

Honestly, this has nothing to do with anything that Florida State did wrong.

Florida State should cruise to victory and head into the most hard three-game run of any team in college basketball high on confidence. Since that did not happen with Delaware State, Florida State's countable record is actually 5-6 on the year.
